What is 24-hr Holter Monitoring?
Holter Monitoring is a way of monitoring a patient’s heart rhythms over a 24-hour period. The patient wears a Holter Monitor (about the size of a PDA) around the waist and has 7 electrodes attached to various areas of the chest.

Why is Holter Monitoring used?
Holter Monitoring helps the doctor evaluate the irregular heart rhythms and identify patients at high risk. This test is done while the patient is exercising, sleeping and continuing with their regular activities over a 24-hour period to allow the doctor a wider spectrum.

How do I know the equipment is working?
After attaching all seven electrodes, insert the memory card (arrow facing up) and the battery (positive side first). As soon as the battery has been inserted, a quick beep should be heard. Approximately 60 seconds later, another three small beeps should be heard to indicate the recorder is working. If one long continuous sound is heard, the card was probably inserted incorrectly or not completely.

What precautions should be taken when being monitorred?
The monitor and the electrodes are not to be touched or adjusted after they are in place. Do not use an electric blanket, heating pads or a waterbed while wearing the monitor. Do not get the monitor or electrodes wet. Do not have x-rays while the monitor is being worn. The patient will be given a diary to record any symptoms and activities the patient experiences while wearing the monitor. The patient is to return the diary with a list of medications taken (if any) and the times noted for each. This information helps the doctor to make a more accurate evaluation based on the reports generated from VentriLabs.
